Should you keep shooting HEIC or switch to JPEG?

Keep HEIC if your photos live on your iPhone, in iCloud and on a Mac: you save storage and lose nothing. Switch to JPEG, with Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, if you regularly send photos to Windows users, attach them to email, or upload them to websites. If you are somewhere in between, keep HEIC and convert on the way out.

· HEIC, HEIF, or a whole folder

Live Photos and bursts convert to a single still. Nothing is uploaded.

    Keep HEIC if…

    • Your photos stay on Apple devices and in iCloud.
    • Storage on the phone or in iCloud is tight. Apple adopted HEIF precisely because it uses less space at the same quality.

    Switch to JPEG if…

    • You send photos to Windows PCs, Android phones or by email every week.
    • You upload photos to forms, portals or marketplaces.
    • You share a camera roll with someone whose devices can’t open HEIC.
    • You’d rather never think about this again.

The switch is under Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. It affects new photos only.

    The middle path

Keep HEIC on the phone and convert when a photo leaves. That is what this site is for: drop the files, download JPEGs, nothing uploaded. It costs a few seconds per batch and keeps the storage saving.

    What you should not do

Don’t re-save JPEGs repeatedly. Every save is another lossy step. Convert from the original HEIC each time you need a JPEG, which is why this converter re-reads the HEIC when you change the quality rather than re-compressing a JPEG.
