HEIC to JPG on Android

Android's media framework has decoded HEIF since Android 8.0, but many apps, web forms and older phones still can't take one. You can convert on the phone itself: open this page in Chrome, drop the photos on the tray, and save the JPEGs. To stop it happening, turn off HEIF in the camera settings.

· HEIC, HEIF, or a whole folder

Live Photos and bursts convert to a single still. Nothing is uploaded.

Two ways a HEIC ends up on an Android phone

    • Someone with an iPhone sent it. Apple says AirDrop, Messages and email might convert to a compatible format on the way, when the sender can tell the recipient needs it; other routes vary: iCloud Photos keeps the original format, and a USB transfer might convert to JPEG or keep the HEIC, depending on the iPhone's settings.
    • Your own camera made it. Recent Samsung phones offer HEIF as a storage-saving option under the camera's picture format settings.

    Convert on the phone

    1. Open this page in Chrome.
    2. Tap choose files and pick the HEIC photos from Files or your gallery.
    3. Wait for the thumbnails to develop, then tap Download. Chrome saves to your Downloads folder.

The decoder runs on the phone. Older or low-memory phones will take longer per photo; do big batches on a computer if you have one.

Turn HEIF off in the camera

Samsung: open the Camera app's settings (the gear) and look under Advanced picture options; Samsung's support page says that is where you "choose to save images in HEIF or RAW formats". Switch HEIF off. Other Android phones: look for "HEIF" or "High efficiency" under the camera's format settings. Wording changes between versions.

Why some Android apps still can't open HEIC

Android's supported-formats table lists a HEIF decoder from Android 8.0. Either way, each app decides which formats it accepts. Upload forms in a web browser are the usual sticking point: some accept only JPG and PNG. What to do when a site rejects the photo.
