HEIC photos in Gmail
Gmail attaches whatever file you give it. If that is a HEIC, the recipient's ability to open it depends on their device, and on Windows it usually fails. Convert to JPG first with the tray above, then attach the JPG.
See what the quality setting does
Drag the line to compare the original with the JPEG at the quality you chose. The loupe shows a 3× crop under your pointer.
Sender: convert, then attach
- Drop the HEIC photos on the tray above. On an iPhone use choose files and pick from Photos.
- Download the JPGs.
- In Gmail, attach the JPGs.
Recipient: convert what you received
Download the attachment from Gmail, then drop it on the tray here. The JPG is made on your own computer.
Why Gmail's preview isn't proof
Seeing the photo in your own mail client proves nothing about the recipient's. They still have to open or save the actual file, and that is where a Windows PC without an HEVC decoder gives up. Sending JPEG removes the doubt.
Stop it at the source
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible on the iPhone. What that changes.
