    Quick answer

    Why resizing beats every other trick

    // Answer

    A phone photo is often 4000 pixels wide and is going to be looked at in a space about 1000 pixels wide. Most of those pixels will never be seen. Halving the width quarters the pixel count, and that saves far more than any quality setting can, with nothing visible lost.

    Rules of thumb

    Which width for which job

    Where it is goingWidth
    Full-screen background2560 px
    Any normal screen1920 px
    Inside a web page1280 px
    Instagram post1080 px

    Still too big after resizing? Switch the format to JPG or WebP, or use the compressor, which can hit an exact file size for you.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

    1920 pixels wide matches the most common desktop screen width. 1280 is plenty for a page that is not full width. 1080 suits Instagram. 800 is right for an email attachment. Anything wider than 2560 is only useful if someone will print it or zoom into it.
    Making an image smaller is safe: you are throwing away pixels nobody could see. Making it larger is not. A browser can only invent the extra pixels by guessing, so an enlarged photo looks soft. This tool only reduces.
    Yes. You set the maximum width and the height follows, so nothing is squashed. If you want a specific shape instead, use the crop control, which cuts from the centre rather than distorting.
    Yes. Drop the lot in, set the width once, and download them as a ZIP. You can rename them on the way out too.
    No. Resizing happens on your own machine, in this tab. There is no server in the path, and the page keeps working with your Wi-Fi switched off.
