Best Image Format for WordPress, Shopify & Etsy
Why does the platform change the right answer?
Each platform resizes, compresses, and displays images differently, so the ideal upload size and format vary. Upload the wrong dimensions and the platform’s automatic rescaling can leave your photos soft or your pages slow.
The formats differ too. WordPress takes JPEG, PNG and newer formats; Shopify’s help names PNG first, then JPEG; Etsy does not support transparent PNGs. Getting format and size right for each one means sharp images that load quickly.
Best image format for WordPress
Use JPEG for WordPress photographs and PNG for logos or transparent graphics. WordPress makes several resized copies of every upload. Since version 5.3, an image larger than 2,560 pixels is scaled down to that size for display, and the original file is kept as well — so an oversized original still takes up storage.
Upload photos sized to your theme’s content width (your theme’s documentation gives it), at a moderate JPEG quality. WordPress accepts AVIF uploads from version 6.5 where the server supports it, and the Performance Team’s Modern Image Formats plugin can generate WebP or AVIF versions of uploads.
| Platform | Format | Recommended size |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress (photo) | JPEG | Your theme’s content width |
| WordPress (logo) | PNG | As needed, transparent |
| Shopify product | PNG or JPEG | 2048×2048px for square images |
| Etsy listing | JPEG (no transparency) | 2000px+ on each side |
Best image format and size for Shopify
Shopify’s help says the best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG, and that 2048×2048px usually displays best for square images. Uploads must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5000×5000px. Shopify creates smaller sizes for different parts of your theme and serves each visitor the best format their browser supports.
Using the same shape and size across all products also keeps collection grids aligned.
Best image format for Etsy listings
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall. JPEG keeps those large images at a manageable file size, and Etsy does not support transparent PNGs (the transparent parts show as black). Etsy also warns that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection.
Etsy crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape shapes. It asks for a landscape or square first photo, with room around the product and the most important part in the centre.
The universal rule across all platforms
Whatever the platform, compress and correctly size your images before uploading — never rely on the platform alone. Automatic responsive resizing helps delivery, but it can’t fix a source file that’s the wrong format or far too large.
A simple pre-upload routine — resize to the platform’s recommended dimensions, use the format that platform asks for, and keep the file well inside its size limit — helps keep every store and site fast.
