    About this tool

Wheel of life: what it is and how to use it

A wheel of life is a circle split into slices, one for each part of your life, with each slice scored from 0 to 10 as it feels right now. This free tool lets you rate eight areas, rename any of them, see the result as a wheel, save dated snapshots to compare, and choose one area and one small next step. It runs in your browser and keeps everything on your device.

    Rating a life from 0 to 10

Scoring how life is going is also how some large surveys work. The World Happiness Report's country ranking rests on a single question, the Cantril Ladder: people imagine a ladder from 0, the worst possible life for them, to 10, the best, and say which step they stand on now.

The Global Flourishing Study asks about several areas instead: happiness and life satisfaction, health, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, close relationships, and financial and material stability. The answers can be averaged into an index from 0 to 10. A wheel works area by area in the same spirit, except that you choose the areas and decide what the numbers mean.

It is a reflection exercise, not a survey or an assessment, and there is no right shape for a wheel. Our guide to what makes a good life suggests rating your life today and again in a month, and noting what you think moved it; saved wheels let you do that one area at a time.

    How to use it

    1. Rename any of the eight areas by typing over it, so the wheel fits your life.
    2. Move each slider to a score from 0 to 10, as that area feels today.
    3. Choose one area to work on and, if you like, write one small next step.
    4. Press Save today's wheel. Save again on a later day and the page compares the latest wheel with the one before.
    5. Press Download now and then for a copy, since the wheels are stored only in this browser.

    An example

Say Work feels like an 8, Fun a 3 and Home a 6. You choose Fun and write "Book one evening out with friends this month." You save the wheel, and when you come back four weeks later the comparison table shows whether Fun moved.

    Questions people ask

What is a wheel of life?

It is a reflection exercise: a circle divided into areas of life, each scored from 0 to 10, so you can see at a glance which areas feel full and which feel thin.

What areas go on a wheel of life?

There is no fixed list. This one starts with health, work, money, relationships, family, growth, fun and home, and you can rename any of them.

    Is a low score bad?

Not in itself. The scores mean whatever you decide they mean, and a wheel has no right shape.

How often should I fill it in?

As often as suits you. Rating again after about a month, as our good life guide suggests for its 0-to-10 ladder, gives you something to compare.
